Lighting Solutions for KATA, Dubai's latest homegrown Japanese restaurant

According to a recent New York Times article, Dubai has some 13,000 restaurants, more per capita than New York. Last year, three top gastronomic guides released their first editions for Dubai. The more impressive story is the rush of excellent homegrown restaurants. The trend began in 2009 before which there were only chain restaurants, franchises and high-end restaurants in hotels. 

Kata is one of the latest homegrown Japanese restaurants that has opened its doors at Dubai Mall. A high standard is demanded for everything, from the magnificent décor to authenticity in the cuisine. Kata, a Japanese restaurant has opened its outlet at Dubai Mall. Launched by Amai Gourmet Restaurant, the new luxury hospitality group, Kata’s day to night concept delivers a world class dining experience. The main features of the restaurant are an outdoor terrace with views of the iconic Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain, a craft mixology station serving non-alcoholic beverages with the same attention to detail associated with the world’s finest bars and a raw bar serving the freshest fish and seafood. 

Kata boasts of an eye-catching interior designed by XBD Collective, an award-winning design firm focused on materializing sophisticated design into inspired physical spaces.

Creation was tasked with the Supply, Testing and Commissioning of lights and lighting control systems for the indoor and outdoor dining areas. The lights and lighting solutions had to match the very high standards set by the designer. 

Helvar was used for lighting control. Scene Touch 7 from Helvar, a 7″ capacitive touch, full-colour, high resolution lighting control panel designed to work with Helvar’s router system over Ethernet was also used in the project. Creation created custom graphics with multiple pre-programmed scenes and settings using this tool.

Lighting tips for restaurants
 
The height of a restaurant’s ceiling will determine the appropriate light fixture to create the desired ambience. Lighting control is essential both for safety and for creating the right mood for the customer’s dining experience. Special features of the dining area such as vaulted ceilings, artwork and coving can be highlighted with directional lighting and uplighters. Outdoor lighting is also important to create an overall welcoming ambience.
