Zaha Hadid’s magnum The Opus comes to life

May - 2020
Dharmendra Patel
The entire team of Creation joins me in wishing each and everyone of you a peaceful Ramadan.

The current unprecedented time brought the best out of our team. While working remotely, we are able to meet our targets, meet customer expectations and deadlines. Once again Creation proved that when the Going gets tough, the Tough get going.

Moving forward, I am sure all of us have realised that life has taken yet another turn. The change was inevitable and the earlier we accept this, the better for all of us to face new challenges. Business will appear to be tough for a few months, but very soon it will be the new norm of normalcy. Humans have time and again shown resilience and adaptation to the new normal and moved ahead, this one will be no different. The road ahead is just as it was in the past, its just taken a turn in another direction. We will use this to bring about new norms, creativity and excel in what we do - which is something that Creation has always done.

The Opus, developed by Omniyat properties in Burj Khalifa district, is one of those dream projects where great minds come together to create a marvel in engineering and architecture.

The Opus’ - Dame Zaha Hadid’s first project in Dubai has all the hallmark of an iconic structure that will attract visitors. Similarly, ME by Melia’s first foray in Dubai at ‘The Opus’ makes it a must visit destination for discerning customers. At Creation, we treasure our association and contribution towards this prestigious project.

It combines residential apartments and a designer hotel operated by the leading ME by Melia Hotels International. The Opus is associated with several world class enterprises that make it a destination in its own right. Dame Zaha Hadid designed both the interiors as well as the exteriors of the project.

"The design conveys the remarkably inventive quality of ZHA's work," said Mahdi Amjad, CEO of Omniyat. "It expresses a sculptural sensibility that reinvents the balance between solid and void, opaque and transparent, interior and exterior."

The Opus Tower Facade Lighting
The Opus truly shines in the night with its stunning lighting system. The void comes alive at night giving the impression of a glowing cube hanging over the ground. The façade lights will play on every curve and crevice of the building imparting a unique personality to it that will give it its character and personality.
The Opus Tower Void
The façade is the preamble to Zaha Hadid’s design that is formed of conjoined towers with an irregular void in the middle and the fluidity and opaqueness will be brought out cleverly through the lighting.

Creation is proud to be associated with this prestigious project.

We have programmed the Pharos Control System for DMX controlled RGB façade lights. According to Mr. Dharmendra Patel, MD, Creation, “Due to the sheer scale of the project, the overall system was quite complex. Especially challenging was the task of programming wherein thousands of lights had to be correctly mapped and addressed, tested and patched individually in the software”.

“During the day, The Opus is a luminous surface, reflecting the dazzling Dubai sun, with the LED lighting highlighting the vivid character of the building in the evening.” he elaborates.

It is our in-house expertise and successful track record that prompted Pharos to recommend us to undertake Project Management of their Architectural DMX system. We oversaw the project for the façade lighting controls over a period of two years says Mr. Dharmendra Patel.

Creation was retained for the supply, testing and commissioning of Helvar Lighting Control Systems for the All Day Dining area, Spa, Gym, and some BoH areas of ‘ME by Melia’. “We had worked with Bond Interiors in the past and this project was through their recommendation,” explains Mr. Patel.

Façade Facts

While deciding upon façade lighting, the functional lights emanating from the interiors should also be considered as should the fenestration in the façade. The windows in turn, need to be carefully placed given the direction of wind and light and the function of the building.
